Carpal tunnel is one workplace illness that can be prevented if the proper steps are taken. Although some people may be predisposed to the condition due to a previous injury, there are several things that can be done to reduce the narrowing of the carpal tunnel in the wrist and the cubital tunnel in the elbow.
Carpal tunnel is caused by continually making repetitive motions with the hands and fingers. Typing, handling a screwdriver, writing with a pen or pencil, or any other task that requires you to continue to make the same motions over and over again can eventually lead to carpal tunnel.
Wearing a brace that stabilizes the wrist and holds it at an angle that takes the pressure off of the carpal tunnel will help to reduce the irritation and discomfort. Remembering to wear the brace while you are working will also prevent the muscles, ligaments, and tendons from swelling and putting pressure on the delicate nerves and blood vessels that flow through the area.
Stretching your fingers and hands often can reduce stiffness and inflammation that often results from constant, repetitive movements. Gently pull each finger out and down to reduce any pressure that builds up in the joints. Rotate the wrists a few times in each direction to keep the blood flowing and the muscles flexible.
Any workplace illness is uncomfortable. Carpal tunnel syndrome develops and worsens over time. Take the time you need to keep your hands and fingers in good condition and you won't have to worry about carpal tunnel affecting your performance.
