Studies have shown that workplace injuries begin to rise as the summer months draw closer. More work-related injuries are reported in the months of June, July, and August, than any other time of the year. Some may attribute the increase to a case of “cabin fever”, others believe that it is the result of distractions.
Extended Exposure to the Workplace
During the winter months, the short vacations many companies offer over the holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve, and Easter) allow the person a small break from the monotony of the workplace. After a few days off, they return to their job with a renewed commitment to their duties. During the summer months, there are fewer holidays and, other than a family vacation, very little time to spend outside relaxing.
The distraction of nice weather and the desire to spend time relaxing or participating in a favorite hobby can be real problems for individuals who are forced to work inside and under not-so-pleasant circumstances. Companies who offer individuals the ability to adjust their work schedule often see a reduction in work-related injuries.
While these statistics are beneficial, it is important to remember that safety in the workplace should always be a priority.
How to Reduce Workplace Injuries
Not all work-related accidents can be prevented, but it is important to have as many safeguards in place as possible. From adjusting work schedules to allowing the employee to work from home if their duties allow it, are both beneficial ways to reduce the risk of injury in the workplace. It relieves the distractions while giving the employee the time they need to relax and enjoy their family.
